Accessing the Data
The CardiacAI Data Repository was established as a collaboration between South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) clinicians and the Centre for Big Data Research in Health (CBDRH) researchers to support collaborative research using linked electronic medical record (EMR) and outcomes data to generate real-world evidence for Australian cardiovascular healthcare and provide a platform for the development of data visualisation and clinical decision support tools that can be rapidly translated into clinical practice.
The CardiacAI Data Repository is stored within a UNSW E-Research Institutional Cloud Architecture (ERICA) workspace. All projects that are approved to access data from the CardiacAI Data Repository, may only access these data within the ERICA environment. No data will be transferred or shared outside of the ERICA environment. All researchers are required to complete training on the ERICA platform and the proper handling of sensitive health data. CardiacAI is not-for-profit and data may not be used for commercial purposes. Data can only be accessed for research that is deemed to be scientifically, methodologically, and ethically sound. Proposals to access the data are assessed by the CardiacAI Data Governance Committee and must fit within the existing ethically approved project aims or be deemed suitible for an ethics amendment.
Project Datasets, Sites and Cohort
The CardiacAI Data Repository prospectively collects EMR data from the following hospitals:

- Prince of Wales Public Hospital
- St George Public Hospital
- The Sutherland Hospital
- The Wollongong Hospital
CardiacAI Cohort includes all patients admitted to a cardiac specialist from the 1st January 2017 to the present.
EMR data is linked with data from the following sources through the Centre for Health Record Linkage (CHeReL). More information about these datasets can be found in the ‘CHeReL Data’ link below.

- The NSW Admitted Patient Data Collection (APDC)
- The NSW Emergency Department Data Collection (EDDC)
- The NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages (RBDM)
- The NSW Cause of Death Unit Record File (COD-URF)
Future Directions
The data extraction pipeline established by the CardiacAI research team, have been set up so that this model can be extended to other hospital sites around NSW. We have secured funding and ethical approval to extende the data collection to the following datasets
- Stroke admissions at all participating hospitals
- EMR data from two additional NSW Local Health Districts
- TeleClinical Care (TCC) – Cardiac
- TeleClinical Care (TCC) – Stroke
We expect linkage with these datasets to commence in 2022.
